In 1986, while on staff at the First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, Pastor Mark Killingsworth began to see a need for a way to reach the new generation of people who were at that time labeled the “yuppies”. His vision was to effectively reach and minister to those from the age of 20 through 40.
In February of 1988, First Baptist sent Pastor Mark and a team of 30 on a mission to start Covenant Baptist Mission. The first meetings were held at the Baptist Hill Assembly campground just west of Mount Vernon. Within a year, a first phase building was constructed at the present sight. Additional land was later purchased, totaling 23 acres. Classrooms and sanctuary space were added in 1996. Covenant’s land, facilities, and equipment are without debt.
Pastor Mark and the leadership team developed a ministry strategy and philosophy that involved praise and worship, small groups, and a plan to develop disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. Their strategy was based on the Vision Statement, "To build a biblically based fellowship under the Lordship of Christ, to worship and fulfill Christ's mission;" a vision we continue to pursue.
A primary goal of Covenant has been to train families, beginning with the children and youth, with a focus on character development and Biblical instruction.
Elders have been elected by the body to support the staff, represent the people, and see the will of the Lord carried out in our church. Service and sacrifice has been the banner under which these godly men have given of themselves for Covenant.
Service has been a theme at Covenant as members are urged to use the gifts and talents God has given them to fulfill the mission of Christ. The talents of many have blessed our church with diverse avenues in order to reach others for Christ.
We are thankful for our heritage, for those who have served on ministry staff, support staff, and all those who have worshipped, served, and have called Covenant their home.
We are “…a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor.” (Isaiah 61:3) May the Lord bless Covenant and continue to work His life and love in her people.
